How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

11th / March / 2020

Commonly used in facial aesthetic treatments, dermal fillers are used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, contour and rejuvenate your skin.

The fillers are based on hyaluronic acid which already exists in your body and in fact, it is a sugar molecule that exists in most living organisms. Hyaluronic acid binds water and can act as a lubricant and shock absorber. It is also important for the transportation of nutrients around the body and ensuring water balance in the skin.

Dermal fillers boost the skin’s hyaluronic acid in order to revitalise and increase volume. This ultimately decreases the appearance of lines and wrinkles, resulting in a more youthful look.

The dermal filler injections themselves contain a soft injectable gel which consists of a stabilised non-animal hyaluronic acid. This gel closely resembles the natural hyaluronic acid in the body. The injection is long-lasting (6-18 months) but is not permanent.
