The summer months are here and many of us have already found ourselves indulging into some summer treats. Despite all the summer fun, it’s still very important to maintain good oral hygiene. Here are a few top tips to help you look after your teeth this summer.

Keep an eye on sugar intake.

Summer is a time when we expect to eat and drink far more sugary treats than usual. From ice creams to refreshing fizzy drinks, these delights can have dire consequences for our teeth. Sugar is one of the most recognised causes for the build-up of plaque around the teeth and gums, a major contributor to enamel erosion and tooth decay. Why not visit our dental hygienist and give those teeth and gums a freshen up.

Don’t rush brushing.

It may sound strange, however brushing your teeth straight after a meal is not good for oral health. When we consume foods that we enjoy such as sweet treats this raises the acidity in our mouths and leaves the enamel on your teeth particularly vulnerable. Brushing your teeth straight after meals can actually cause further damage, we advise that you wait for an hour after a meal before you brush.

Drink plenty of water.

Food debris can be a real issue for our teeth and can contribute towards problems such as a plaque build-up and bad breath. It’s important to make sure your mouth is as clean as possible. Drinking water when consuming food offers a healthy and natural way to cleanse the mouth by dislodging and flushing out food debris.

Stick to your normal routine.

Summer can be a busy time but keeping to your normal oral health regime is a great way to keep your teeth looking and feeling healthy during the summer period. So, remember to brush your teeth at least twice a day and to use dental floss to make sure food debris is not left in between your teeth where it can cause damage.
